HEROES

The monumental 10m2 mural HEROES, commissioned for the millennium of the city of Roskilde, represents the largest Polaroid work in Danish art history.

In the role of itinerant photographer, the artist rolled up her canvas backdrop and spent a month trekking through the streets of the city. The Polaroid format translocated the darkroom of the photographer to public space, with each of the 1,000 portraits being signed by the subject in situ.

Taking its title from David Bowie and the line ‘We can be heroes, just for one day’ the work questions the social hierarchies that determine who is immortalised by artists and thereby enter the museum archive to leave their mark on history.

The thousand people portrayed in HEROES, at least, have been granted a permanent place in Denmark’s official archives and history. The largest Polaroid work to be made in the country, it is now in the collection of the National Museum of Photography.
